A family-owned boatyard in Melbourne’s west has been named after a former state premier who spent more than three decades leading it.
John Howard’s wife, Lucy, died in December, just months before her husband won his first major federal election in 1989.
It’s the third nomination of a boatyard for Mr Howard in as many years.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a nominee for the boatyard, so we thought it would be a good time to honour John Howard’s life,” said Peter Bickford, chairman of Mr Howard’s former political party, the Liberal Party.
“We’ve been working for years to get John Howard to the boat yard and now he’s finally done it.”
John Howard was a man of great integrity, and he was a true gentleman.
“It really means a lot to have this nomination.”
The boatyard has been run by his wife Lucy and her family for a long period of time and it is their intention to name the place after him.
“The former Premier has a boat that is a family property, Mr Bickff said.
He has said he was shocked and saddened by the news of the nomination.
Mr Bickfords daughter Julie and Mr Howard family members are expected to attend the nomination ceremony on Monday afternoon.
Mr Howard was prime minister from 1995 until 1999 and served for three terms from 1996 to 2001.
