New York (AP) The New York Islander hockey team announced Tuesday that it is hiring an experienced and skilled boat yard to assist with the development of its newest, most powerful, and most expensive boat, the Richard’s Boat Yard.
The Nassau County (N.Y.) district attorney’s office has been investigating the Nassau-born Richard’s boat, which was built by the New York-based Richard’s company, Richard’s Motor Boat, for nearly three decades.
It’s the first-ever full-time boat yard job for the team, which has struggled to keep up with its new $4.3 million payroll.
The team has not said whether it will move to a new building to be built in Nassau, where the team has its headquarters, but it’s known to be moving to its current home at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum.
The Richard’s job comes at a time when the Islanders have struggled to find enough players to fill a roster that now includes the likes of Matt Donovan, Andrew Ladd, Nick Leddy, and Jaroslav Halak.
They are also in the midst of rebuilding their blue line.
New York is one of the few teams in the league that hasn’t yet signed a player, a major concern in a market where players tend to sign elsewhere in the world.
The Islanders are also one of several teams that are considering trading their captain, John Tavares.
New England, Philadelphia and Washington have also been looking at building their rosters.
