A new startup that lets unemployed people sell their boats and then hire someone to operate them has raised $1.5 million in funding.
The Boatyard was founded by a group of former fishermen who said they were frustrated by the lack of experience they had in boat sales and the lack, at times, of job training.
In their vision, the company would let the unemployed sell their old boats, and then provide them with training, experience and the skills to operate their boats.
Its founder and CEO, David Bower, told Business Insider that he has been working with an employer in the US and UK that is interested in helping people sell boats and hire someone on a short-term basis.
“We had to have a vision for the future of boats,” Bower said.
Bower said that the company is trying to develop a system that allows people to sell their own boats and operate them, rather than having to be licensed to operate a boat.
He said that it is important for businesses to have experience with new technologies and a desire to do something new, because the business model for selling boats is changing.
“It used to be that you had to go out and rent a boat,” he said.
“Now you can sell your own boat, and it’s actually cheaper and easier to do.”
“It’s a great time to be a small business.”
Barry Johnson, who was an entrepreneur and investor in the tech startup Uber when it raised $40 million in 2012, said he was excited to be part of the company’s growth.
While Johnson said that he thought that the government’s emphasis on boat sales might be making things more expensive, he also believes that it would have a positive effect on the economy and the unemployed.
Johnson said that if people don’t want to sell a boat, there’s not a lot of options out there.
We’ve seen a lot in the last couple of years of government and industry focused on the idea that the unemployed are a workforce problem, he said, adding that people should be able to sell boats if they want to.
But Johnson said he’s worried about the effect that the introduction of a job-to-boat system will have on the jobs market.
“[It] could be the case that if the unemployed don’t have a job, they have nowhere else to go and that they’re going to be forced into boat sales,” he added.
It’s unclear how many people the Boatyard would target for its training program.
According to the company website, it offers up to four hours of hands-on training a week.
That program is free for those with a valid work permit, and Bower told Business Insiders that it’s a pilot program.
Bower hopes that the idea can grow beyond its initial scope.
At the end of the pilot, the group plans to roll out a more permanent version of the program.
He said that they plan to expand the program to other states in the coming months.
